Now, I’ve spent some time at Rivers Casino. Not a ton. Probably less than you’d think. Rarely at lunch time, though. And never for professional purposes. Never. N-E-V-E-R.
So, Thursday was a fresh experience from the jump, even before considering that my task was to be part of the first handful of bettors at the North Shore casino’s new sportsbook. It was a 12-minute walk from my desk at the Post-Gazette.
Lines for the betting windows and kiosks opened at 2 p.m. for a two-day test phase monitored by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The plan is to be up and rolling in a more permanent capacity by Saturday. The day after, a football game of some note takes place next door.
The upshot of all this: I walked in, placed my bet and walked out. It took less than 15 minutes. It was fine. How things look at, say, 4:07 p.m. on Sunday is anyone’s guess — there’s a decent chance it’ll be like the last scene of “Trading Places” if it were staged at, like, a Buffalo Wild Wings.
