BJP to add 7 crore new members

Cashing in on the massive mandate in the last Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party said it is likely to add 7 crore new members. This will be in addition to the existing 11 crore members of the party.
BJP working president J.P. Nadda said the party has already 5.81 crore (5,81,34,242) new members through online drive, while 62 lakh have been registered offline, some were in pipeline, which together will cross 7 crore new members.
Now only eight countries in the world have more population than the BJP, Nadda said.
Nadda said the ongoing membership drive was part of the organisational election process. After this drive, the process to enroll active members will start. This will be followed by booth level elections from October 10, and then district and state level. By December, the process to hold elections at national level to choose a new president will begin.
Nadda said the new president will be chosen after the process from whoever files nomination in December. Nadda is widely expected to become the full time president after elections.
Nadda said a review meeting was held on Thursday. The membership drive was started from Varanasi on July 6 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The drive got over on August 20. Under the party constitution, the BJP needs 20 per cent new members, which translates into 2.25 crore members.
Nadda said party received huge support in West Bengal where the target was 20 lakh where it is now expected to cross one crore. In Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP added six lakh new members. Shivraj Singh Chouhan in-charge of membership drive said even large number of members of the minority community joined from the Kashmir Valley.
Member of the membership drive committee Sobha Surendran said though the target was 20 per cent new members from last time, all Southern states have enrolled over 40 per cent new members.
Nadda claimed all states have crossed 50 per cent targets, and the Northeast states have all crossed 100 per cent targets.
The BJP had also deputed 1.85 lakhs vistaraks who spent over a week to enroll new members.
