In a high voltage Indian Premier League 2019 Eliminator match between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra became the second player to get out by obstructing the field in history of the tournament.
Delhi Capitals eventually won the match by 2 wickets in a last over thriller to set up the Qualifier 2 clash against Chennai Super Kings on Friday, May 9, but Mishra's obstruction will be the talk of the town.
In the last, over of the match, DC needed 5 runs to win the match and SRH skipper Kane Williamsongave the ball to their most successful pacer of the night, Khaleel Ahmed. On the fourth ball of the over, Khaleel bowled an outstanding delivery on which Mishra was beaten by a few inches, but he instead runs for the byes to collect the important run for the team. In the course of his run, Mishra changed his way and covered the stumps by his body to which Khaleel's throw directly hit him.
Khaleel immediately appealed to umpire Ravi and signalled for the DRS which was referred upstairs as the soft signal was NOT OUT. First, they checked the caught behind and Ultra Edge detected nothing. So Umpire Ravi indicated not out. Then, Khaleel again appealed to the umpire. Actually, the confusion arouses because Khaleel signalled the 'T' which was a review for a caught behind. But he was actually appealing for obstructing the field and after numerous replays, it looks like Mishra should be given out.
In the end, Mishra was given out by the third umpire and he became the second player in IPL to get out in this manner. The first inductee in the list was Yusuf Pathan, who got out in the same fashion when he was the part of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2013 against Pune Warriors India in Ranchi. He was playing on 72 runs when he obstructed the field on Wayne Parnel delivery.
However, Khaleel's heroics went in vain as Delhi all-rounder Keemo Paul smashed a boundary on the second last ball of the match to seal the win for his team. This was the first time when Delhi franchise won any match in the play-off stage in the tournament history.
