Stylist reveals her top tips for decorating the Christmas tree

Stick to a theme, let the kids have their own tree and don’t even mention the forbidden “T word”.
As thousands of us prepare for the annual trip into the attic for the Christmas trimmings this weekend, the woman who decorates up to 90 trees every festive season has revealed her top tips for getting the sleek shopping centre look at home.
Stylist Sophie Taylor, from Taylored to Suit, spends countless hours matching baubles and garlands to create the pristine festive decor we see in Perth’s major hotels, shopping centre and businesses every December.
But how soon is too soon? Ms Taylor said it would be impossible to decorate all her clients’ trees on the traditional start to the festive season on December 1, so she starts weeks in advance. However, there is a point where she draws the line.
“We won’t do anything before Melbourne Cup day,” she said.
“I refuse to do it, I think it’s taking things a bit far.”
Ms Taylor said the key to getting the shopping centre look at home is to choose a colour theme.
Gold and rose gold are the biggest colour trends this year in the form of artificial florals and butterfly and bird-themed decorations.

However, pastel colours and stars - aside from the one on the top of the tree - are no longer in vogue and Ms Taylor says sentimental decorations made at school also needed to be used wisely.
“I have my tree and then I have my kids’ tree which they can decorate themselves,” she said.
“Most mums especially like their tree pretty uniform so they do their own tree and then have a smaller one in the playroom or games room for all the kids’ decorations.”
Artificial trees are favoured over real ones for their symmetry and longevity, while For a rustic theme, Ms Taylor recommends a snowy-themed tree with minimalist wooden decorations.
The biggest no-no? Tinsel. Mrs Taylor insists she’s never used tinsel in her 12 years as a professional festive stylist, for no other reason than it’s “just awful”.
A close second on the Christmas tree naughty list are multi-coloured lights.
“Multi-coloured as OK if you’ve got multi-coloured decorations but one good tip I tell everyone is that you need lots and lots of lights, all in the same colour and they go on first,” she said.
“If you do it well you don’t need to put many decorations on at all.”
“But one thing to remember is it’s your tree and you need to have it how you want at the end of the day.”
